"Hardware NAT in DD-WRT? Slow internet / speed tests?" Or similaras threads for 'slow speed tests' vs OEM f/w or direct modem connections have become prevalent. Here's another thread about CTF, one on snb from AsusWRT's RMerlin, and some info from OpenWRT lists. _____

We would love to help trying out new firmware and reporting issues we found. Network address translation between a private network and the Internet. Network address translation (NAT) is a method of remapping an IP address space into another by modifying network address information in the IP header of packets while they are in transit across a traffic routing device. Also, if NAT could be done in h/w, this would mean that the CPU would not be interupted, as it would be done by an ASIC and thus the term hardware NAT? Also, can anyone tell me what platforms support h/w NATting. I can see the 6500 with sup32 does. Does the 73xx platform? not sure >> Sup720 with PFC3a or above will do HW NAT/PAT. The NAT router translates the inside global address of the packet to the inside local address, and sends it to the destination computer. NAT overloading utilizes a feature of the TCP/IP protocol stack , multiplexing , that allows a computer to maintain several concurrent connections with a remote computer (or computers) using different TCP or
The nat_zone mentioned here is used to push the zone attribute to the hardware on the L3 RIF (and only hardware uses it for the zone-id differences when doing the translation). For binding the interface to the static dnat entry, the L3 IP (126.96.36.199) of the nat entry is matched against any L3 interface IP in the system.

For systems where a NAT router makes sense (i.e. multiple machines sharing a single Internet connection) we highly recommend the use of a good NAT router. Customer Service - US.
